Muhammad’s Farewell Sermon

A Prophet Says Farewell

In the tenth year after the emigration (Hijra) the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless him and give him peace) went to the Holy City of Makkah for Hajj.

There he spoke to over 140,000 Muslims, who had travelled from far and wide, on the Plain of Arafat and there he delivered his farewell speech to them. After praising and thanking Allah the Holy Prophet made a beautiful speech, most of which is written below;

Oh People! Listen to me attentively,

for I know not whether, after this year,

I shall be amongst you again.

Therefore listen to me very carefully

and tell these words to those who could not be present here.

Oh People!

Just as you regard this month, this day

and this city as Sacred,

So regard the life and property of every Muslim

as a Sacred Trust.

Return the goods that are entrusted to you

to their rightful owners.

Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you.

Allah has forbidden you to take interest (usury), therefore all interest obligations shall

henceforth be waived.

Although, your capital is yours to keep.

You shall neither inflict inequity nor suffer it…..

….Beware of Satan, for the safety of your religion.

He has lost all hope that he will ever be able

to lead you astray in major things,

so beware of following him in lesser things.

Oh people!

It is true that you have certain rights

with regard your womenfolk,

but they also have rights over you.

Remember that you have taken them as your wives

only under Gods trust

and with His permission.

If they respect your rights

then you must fulfil their rights

to provision in kindness

Treat your womenfolk well and be kind to them, for they are your partners and committed helpers

And it is your right

that they do not make friends

with those people

whom you don’t approve

and that they remain chaste.

Oh people!

Listen to me in earnest!

Worship Allah

Perform you five daily prayers

Fast in month of Ramadan

Pay Zakaat (annual alms)

And perform Hajj if you can afford to.

All humankind is from Adam and Eve!

An Arab has NO SUPERIORITY over a non-Arab,

nor does a non Arab have superiority over an Arab.

A white person has no superiority over a black one,

nor does a black person have superiority over a white one;

except through the means of piety and good deeds.

Learn that every Muslim is a brother

to every Muslim and that the Muslims make up

ONE BROTHERHOOD….

Remember, one day you will appear before Allah

and answer for your deeds.

So Beware! Do not stray from righteousness

after I am gone.

O People!

No new Prophet or Apostle will come after me

and no new (true) faith will be born.

Reason well, therefore, oh people

and understand the words which I convey to you

I leave behind me two things

the Qur’an

and my example, the SUNNAH

and if you follow these you will never go astray.

All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and they to others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than those who listened to me directly.

The Holy Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) ended his farewell address by asking the people whether they thought that he had faithfully declared his Message and they responded in one voice ‘Yes!’. The he said;

Be my witness O Allah ,

That I have passed Your Message to Your people

As a final word he recited in the name of Allah the following Revelation;

This day I have perfected for you

your religion

And completed my favour unto you

And have chosen for you as a religion ISLAM
