Stuff Nationalism

In my view Nationalism is a harmful and divisive philosophy and the retreat of the petty. I am not talking here about natural patriotism, because that is something quite different. Nationalism is a nasty thing in which exalt ourselves at the expense of others, in which we recognise the humanity of our nation, but are in denial of that of other nations. A Nationalist may call for wars based upon prejudice or oppress a minority because it is different and get involved in all sorts of other hate filled tribalism, whilst what I would consider to be a true patriot would not do.
“Patriotism is when love of your own people comes first – nationalism, is when hate for people other than your own comes first.” General Charles De Gaulle
“always disagree, however, when people end up saying that we can only combat Communism, Fascism or what not if we develop an equal fanaticism. It appears to me that one defeats the fanatic precisely by not being a fanatic oneself, but … by using one’s intelligence.” George Orwell
“War against a foreign country only happens when the moneyed classes think they are going to profit from it. George Orwell
“The nationalist not only does not disapprove of atrocities committed by his own side, he has a remarkable capacity for not even hearing about them.” George Orwell
“All the war-propaganda, all the screaming and lies and hatred, comes invariably from people who are not fighting.”George Orwell
“There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people.” Howard Zinn
“Our true nationality is mankind.” HG Wells
“Nationalism is an infantile thing. It is the measles of mankind.” Albert Einstein
“In worshipping their nationhood men worship themselves and scorn others, and that is no healthy thing.” CJ Sansom
